LHC to hear petition against revival of Basant festival
Lahore High Court on Wednesday accepted the petition against revival of Basant festival for hearing.

According to details, Justice Atir Mehmood will conduct the hearing on Thursday at 9am. The petition filed by Advocate Safdar Shaheed Pirzada adopted stance that Basant was banned after it turned into a blood sport.

Permitting such an entertainment activity which cause loss of human lives is against constitution, adds the plea.

The petitioner maintained that the government is allowing the celebration to divert attention from public issues.

The plea has requested the court to ban the move of government as the kite string killed several precious lives and damaged national property worth billion of rupees.

The provincial administration had removed the 12-year-old ban on the kite-flying festival a day earlier, saying that it will be celebrated in the second week of February 2019.

Provincial Minister for Information Fayyazul Hassan Chohan asserted that the Basant is a cultural festival of Lahore through which had a business billions of rupees.

The minister said that the cultural circles of Lahore had been asking to celebrate Basant festival. “The festival creates enormous economic activity and is a source of promoting tourism.”

He added that a committee comprising the Punjab law minister, the provincial chief secretary, and other administrative officials, will be formed to deliberate on the modalities about how the negative aspects of the festival can be avoided and overcome.
