Pakistan to launch remote sensing satellite in July

Pakistan to launch remote sensing satellite in July

Pakistan to launch remote sensing satellite in July
Pakistan will be launching a PakTES-1A, a remote sensing satellite (RSS) in July this year, Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal said in a post on social media on Sunday.

According to Dr Faisal, PakTES-1A, which is an indigenously developed satellite, weighs 285kg and will be launched at 610km sun-synchronous orbit next month.

Earlier this year, Beijing had announced it would launch two remote sensing satellites for Pakistan.

The China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALVT) and Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) worked jointly on the satellites. The satellites will be used for geo-monitoring and taking images from the orbit.

In 2016, China and Pakistan had signed an agreement to launch a special remote sensing satellite. The main reason for signing the agreement was to monitor the development of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects.

Currently, three satellites are under design by SUPARCO in collaboration with different universities throughout China

Facebook to offer interactive game shows on video platform

Facebook to offer interactive game shows on video platform

Facebook to offer interactive game shows
Facebook said Tuesday it is offering a series of new formats for its online video platform including interactive game shows, quizzes and polls.

The new formats will be available to those creating video content on the social network, which is searching for a niche to compete against rivals ranging from Netflix to Google-owned YouTube.

One of the features from Facebook will allow interactivity, which could be used for live game shows or challenges which offer cash prizes.

"We believe that watching video doesn't have to be passive, and that many types of traditional entertainment formats, from game shows to reality TV to scripted content, can be reinvented to be community-centric," said a statement from Facebook's entertainment partnerships team.

"We're announcing a set of new tools polling for (Facebook) Live and on-demand video and gamification for Live that will give creators the power to create fun, unique, and interactive content for their fans."

Facebook, which has already begun offering original video content, said it already has partners for the new format. One show, "Outside Your Bubble" by Buzz Feed News, will challenge contestants to "step outside their bubble" to guess what people from different social media groups are thinking.

Facebook earlier this month announced its first original news shows for the social network with a variety of partners including CNN, Fox News, ABC News and Univision. Facebook is offering a combination of professionally produced shows as well as user videos to compete against its rivals.

Apple to make fewer new model iPhones this year

Apple to make fewer new model iPhones this year

Apple to make fewer new model iPhones this year
Apple expects to ship 80 million new model iPhones this year, down 20 per cent from what it had planned at the same time last year, Japanese financial daily Nikkei reported on Friday, citing industry sources.

The California-based firm has asked suppliers to make about 20 per cent fewer components for the three new iPhones it plans to launch in the second half of 2018, compared to last year’s plans for its iPhone X and iPhone 8 models, the paper reported.

The report added to concerns that consumer passion for new editions of the iconic smartphones may be cooling after years of scorching growth, sending shares in Apple and many of its major suppliers lower and weighing on global stock markets.

Porsche's first electric car will be called the Taycan

Porsche's first electric car will be called the Taycan

Porsche's first electric car will be called the Taycan
Porsche's first electric car, which has been known as the Mission E during its development, will be called the Taycan (pronounced tie-con), when it goes on sale late next year.

The name, which is derived from Turkish, according to Porsche, and translates as "lively young horse," is a reference to the prancing steed at the center of Porsche's shield-shaped logo.

The four-door car with a sports car shape was first unveiled to the public as the Mission E concept car at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. A crossover SUV version, called the Mission E Cross Turismo, was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year.

The Taycan will be Porsche's first fully electric car. The company, which is part of the Volkswagen Group, currently offers several plug-in hybrid models and sold just over 900 of the Porsche 918 Spyder, a limited-edition plug-in hybrid supercar.

The Taycan will be able to go from a stop to 60 miles an hour in under 3.5 seconds, thanks to its two electric motors that produce more than 600 horsepower. Tesla's highest-performance cars and SUVs can get to 60 miles an hour even faster in less than three seconds.

But Porsche's brand image is built on track performance not just straight line acceleration so, with the Taycan, Porsche promises a "level of continuous power that is unmatched by any other electric vehicle." Other electric cars can't handle repeated hard acceleration because their batteries will overheat. The car's top speed will be 155 miles an hour.

Porsche makes different versions of all its cars, ranging from from fast to extremely fast, and it's expected to do the same with the Taycan. There will likely be more extreme versions of this car in the future.

Flying car startup backed by Google founder offers test flights

Flying car startup backed by Google founder offers test flights

Flying car startup backed by Google founder offers test flights
A flying car project backed by Google co-founder Larry Page was closer to take-off on Wednesday, with a model for test flights by aspiring buyers.

Kitty Hawk, funded by Page, unveiled a "Flyer" model it described as "an exciting first step to sharing the freedom of flight."

The company was created last year in Google’s home town of Mountain View, California, and has been testing a prototype in New Zealand.

Images and details were available at a freshly launched website at flyer.aero, and CNN posted coverage of a reporter taking to the air in a Flyer over a lake at a test site near Las Vegas.

Kitty Hawk chief executive Sebastian Thrun, who founded the Google X lab devoted to "moonshots" such as self-driving cars and internet-synched eyewear, was quoted by CNN as saying piloting Flyer was as easy playing the video game "Minecraft."

"Making Flyer accessible, which is what we do at our Lake Las Vegas training facility, helps more people experience the freedom and possibilities of vehicles of the future," a Kitty Hawk spokeswoman told AFP.

"Our immediate priority is to invite small groups of people -- customers, influencers, media and community members - to experience the freedom of flight here in our newly opened training facility."

People interested in buying Flyers were invited at the website to apply for an invitation to do so, with no price specified.

An early version of Flyer was shown off last year.

The electric aircraft had 10 small lift rotors on its wings, making it capable of vertical take-off and landing like a helicopter.

Kitty Hawk said that at 15 meters (50 feet) away, it sounded about as lound as a lawn mower, while from 250 feet away the volume was on par with a loud conversation.

Test flights by first-timers were over water, with the top speed limited to 32 kilometers per hour (20 mph) and the altitude to no more than three meters.

The uncovered cockpit appeared big enough for one person, with their head poking out as it might from a go-kart.

"Flyer is designed to be easy to fly and flown for recreational purposes over water and uncongested areas," the website said.

"Flyer is Kitty Hawk’s first personal flying vehicle and the first step to make flying part of everyday life."

The new flying machine is one of several concept vehicles being testing, with Uber and others in the mix.

Page and Sergey Brin founded Google in 1998, starting out in a Silicon Valley garage and transforming into one of the world’s largest companies.

He remains chief executive of Google-parent Alphabet but the Kitty Hawk project is a personal pursuit, not part of the tech giant’s operations.

Facebook announces first original news shows

Facebook announces first original news shows
Facebook on Wednesday announced its first original news shows for the social network, joining other online platforms producing video to compete with television.

The news shows will be produced for Facebook by a variety of partners including CNN, Fox News, ABC News and Univision.

The programs are producing the social network's on-demand video service called Facebook Watch, which is part of an effort to compete with platforms such as Google-owned YouTube, and potentially develop a wider following.

Facebook said the launch of news shows was also aimed at offering its members "trusted" content following concerns that the platform was used to spread misinformation.

"Earlier this year we made a commitment to show news that is trustworthy, informative, and local on Facebook," said a statement from Facebook news partnerships chief Campbell Brown.

"As a part of that commitment, we are creating a dedicated section within Watch for news shows produced exclusively for Facebook by news publishers. With this effort, we are testing a destination for high quality and timely news content on the platform."

The first programs include ABC's "On Location" featuring contribution from the network's journalists from around the globe; CNN's "Anderson Cooper Full Circle" featuring the popular CNN host; and "Fox News Update" hosted by chief news anchor Shepard Smith.

Xiaomi unveils flagship smartphone, virtual reality headset

Xiaomi unveils flagship smartphone, virtual reality headset

Xiaomi flagship smartphone
Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi [IPO-XMGP.HK], lining up for a $10 billion IPO, held a rock concert-style launch on Thursday to unveil its latest flagship smartphone and a virtual reality headset developed with Facebook Inc’s Oculus.

The smartphone and connected device maker is looking to rev up excitement levels with its fans - and potential investors - ahead of the Hong Kong listing that could come as soon as June, as it looks to justify a sky-high expected valuation.

Xiaomi is expected to command a market value of $70 billion to $100 billion, just eight years after its founding. Raising $10 billion would also make it the largest global listing in almost four years after Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.

In an event in Shenzhen in front of a packed-out stadium with thousands of Xiaomi super-fans, the firm’s chief executive Lei Jun presented the flagship Mi 8, an anniversary smartphone strikingly similar to Apple Inc’s iPhone X.

Xiaomi’s blockbuster initial public offering (IPO) has drawn major scrutiny on the company’s performance, even following a recent return to form and after it blew past its 100 billion yuan sales target for 2017 with a couple of months to spare.

There are concerns over thin margins, a stalling Chinese smartphone market, costs of opening physical stores rather than sticking with online sales, and obstacles facing the brand to retain its followers and win new ones overseas, analysts said.

At the Shenzhen event, chapters of Xiaomi fans carrying colourful banners cheered Lei onto the stage, the device maker’s charismatic founder who has developed a cult status with the so-called “mi fans” akin to the late Apple founder Steve Jobs.

The firm also presented a Xiaomi headset developed with Facebook’s virtual reality unit Oculus, which is now led by former Xiaomi executive Hugo Barra, who attended the event. Facebook’s main social media platform is blocked in China.

Xiaomi, which started with smartphones but has since branched out into a plethora of smart devices, gained a following in China by releasing limited batches of slick-looking phones online at a mid-range price tag.

It has a hard core of followers in China who snap up its gadgets ranging from scooters and air purifiers to rice cookers and event underpants.

Amid the bright lights and a pumping soundtrack at the Shenzhen show, one attendee said he had been won over - though Xiaomi will need to attract many more to sustain its IPO push.

Liao Ruihang who works in e-commerce said he had traveled from neighboring Guangzhou for the event and was attracted to the brand by the wide array of apps that could be used on Xiaomi’s open-source operating system.

“I’ve been using an iPhone but will now buy a Mi 8,” he said, flanked by other fans wearing t-shirts blazoned with slogans such as, “I love Mi”.

Google launches second app in China

Google launches second app in China

Google launches second app in China
Alphabet’s Google has launched a file managing tool in several Chinese app stores as it looks for fresh inroads into the world’s biggest smartphone market, where most of the internet giant’s top products remain banned.

The US firm on Thursday released a China-specific version of ‘Files Go’, a storage management tool for smartphones, the second China-specific app it has released since its flagship services were banned.

The app, which has a small number of users compared to Google’s flagship search and app store products, is also the first it has launched on third-party Chinese app stores including those hosted by Baidu, Xiaomi and Huawei.
China has represented a black hole on Google’s global map since regulators began banning the company’s products in 2010 when it refused to censor results in line with local laws.

Its search engine is banned in the Chinese market along with its app store, email and cloud storage services.

China’s cyber regulators say restrictions on foreign media and internet platforms are designed to block influences that contravene stability and socialist ideas.

Google has been trying to expand its operations in China and has launched a dedicated artificial intelligence research hub in Beijing, but its return to providing consumer products has been slow amid tightening censorship regulations.
Google has, however, ramped up its China efforts recently. CEO Sundar Pichai has made several visits to the country and has spoken at two Chinese government forums since December.

Last year, Google released its ‘Google Translate’ app in China. It is maintained by Google’s local joint venture.

The ‘Files Go’ app, which helps users free up storage space, has been developed by Google’s Next Billion program that targets developing markets, including India and Indonesia, where there are a large number of people using low-end smartphones.

While Google’s consumer services are largely blocked in China, its Android operating system is used widely by top smartphone vendors, including Xiaomi and Huawei phones.

Apple sees steep increase in U.S. national security requests

Apple sees steep increase in U.S. national security requests

Apple sees steep increase in U.S. national security requests
Apple Inc on Friday issued its twice yearly transparency report on government data requests, showing another sharp increase in U.S. national security-related requests.

Apple said it received as many as 16,249 national security requests affecting up to 8,249 accounts during the second half of 2017. The number of requests rose 20 percent compared with the first half of 2017, when Apple received 13,499 such requests.

But the most recent figures are more than two-and-a-half times higher than the comparable period a year earlier, when Apple received only 5,999 such requests.

Other tech firms also experienced a jump in national security request between the second half of 2016 and the first half of 2017. National security requests to Alphabet Inc’s Google rose 36 percent, to almost 51,000. Similar requests to Facebook Inc nearly doubled, to almost 27,000.

Facebook and Google have not yet reported full numbers of national security requests for the second half of 2017 because both companies break out individual figures for both National Security Letters and requests under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA. The FISA numbers are subject to a six-month reporting delay by law. Apple publishes an aggregate number of both types of requests and so is able to report the figures sooner.

Apple also said on Friday that it would start reporting requests from governments to take down apps from its App Store.

Last year, Apple took down virtual private networking apps, or VPNs, from its App Store in China in order to comply with a new Chinese cyber security law. Such apps help users browse the internet more privately and were used to evade Chinese internet censorship rules. Chinese regulators also forced Apple to remove Microsoft Corp’s Skype internet phone and messaging app from the App Store in China.

Apple’s new tracking of app takedown requests starts on July 1, so the data will begin to appear starting one year from now.

'I'm sorry', Facebook boss tells European lawmakers

'I'm sorry', Facebook boss tells European lawmakers

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg
Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg apologised to the European Parliament on Tuesday for the "harm" caused by a huge breach of users data and by a failure to crack down on fake news.

But Zuckerberg s appearance failed to satisfy MEPs who accused him of dodging questions and criticised a format that gave the parliament s political leaders far more time to give long-winded speeches.

His livestreamed testimony in Brussels was the latest stop on a tour of apology for the Cambridge Analytica scandal that saw him quizzed for ten hours in the US Congress in April, and will take him to Paris on Wednesday.

Zuckerberg said that while Facebook has brought in new features to connect people, it had become clear in the last two years that they "haven t done enough to prevent these tools from being used for harm".

"And that goes for fake news, foreign interference in elections or developers misusing people s information. We didn t take a broad enough view of our responsibility," he said in his opening statement.

"That was a mistake, and I m sorry for it."

The European Parliament invited Zuckerberg in March after Facebook admitted that up to 87 million users may have had their data hijacked by British consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica.

The firm, which was working for US President Donald Trump s 2016 campaign, has since declared bankruptcy.

Zuckerberg originally tried to send a junior executive instead but finally bowed to pressure to appear. However he only agreed for it to be livestreamed on Monday after initially insisting on it being behind closed doors.

Appearing calm and unruffled during the 90-minute hearing, Zuckerberg welcomed the EU s sweeping new personal data protection rules, which come into effect in three days, saying that his website would be "fully compliant".

In that spirit, Zuckerberg said Facebook was bringing in new features including a special "clear history" button that would allow them to delete any cookies or browsing history details it stores.

Zuckerberg admitted that Facebook had been "too slow to identify Russian interfering" in the 2016 US presidential ballot but was working with European governments for future elections.

In the run-up to last year s French elections Facebook "found and took down more than 30,000 fake accounts", he said.

But some European lawmakers were still unhappy with the format in which Zuckerberg answered questions for only 25 minutes -- half as long as the time it took the parliament s political leaders to get through their long-winded questions.

"Today s pre-cooked format was inappropriate and ensured Zuckerberg could avoid our questions," Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament s Liberal leader, tweeted afterwards.

The former Belgian prime minister asked Zuckerberg during the hearing if he wanted to be remembered as a "genius who created a digital monster".

Manfred Weber, the German head of the centre-right European People s Party, the largest group in parliament, said the Facebook chief was "not very convincing" and "did not answer all our questions".

But European Parliament President Antonio Tajani -- who invited Zuckerberg and arranged the meeting -- called Zuckerberg s visit a "success" even if he said his apology was "not enough" and required follow up.

Zuckerberg meanwhile pledged that Facebook would make fresh investments to protect its users in the wake of the scandal -- with many of those in Europe where he plans to have 10,000 employees by the end of the year.

"It s going to take time to work through all of the changes we must make. But I m committed to getting it right, and to making the significant investments needed to keep people safe," he added.

"I expect this will significantly impact our profitability. But I want to be clear: keeping people safe will always be more important than maximising our profits."

Zuckerberg is due to meet French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Wednesday.

NASA plans to send mini-helicopter to Mars

NASA plans to send mini-helicopter to Mars

NASA plans to send mini-helicopter to Mars
The US space agency said Friday it plans to launch the first-ever helicopter to Mars in 2020, a miniature, unmanned drone-like chopper that could boost our understanding of the Red Planet.

Known simply as "The Mars Helicopter," the device weighs less than four pounds (1.8 kilograms), and its main body section, or fuselage, is about the size of a softball.

It will be attached to the belly pan of the Mars 2020 rover, a wheeled robot that aims to determine the habitability of the Martian environment, search for signs of ancient life, and assess natural resources and hazards for future human explorers.

Mars 2020 is planned for launch in July 2020 with an arrival on the surface of Mars expected in February 2021.

"NASA has a proud history of firsts," said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine in a statement.

"The idea of a helicopter flying the skies of another planet is thrilling." No nation has ever flown an helicopter on Mars before.

Thin atmosphere

The undertaking began in August 2013 as a technology development project at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

In order to fly in Mars’ thin atmosphere, the space helicopter has to be super light, yet as powerful as possible.

"The altitude record for a helicopter flying here on Earth is about 40,000 feet (12,100 meters)," said Mimi Aung, Mars Helicopter project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

"The atmosphere of Mars is only one percent that of Earth, so when our helicopter is on the Martian surface, it’s already at the Earth equivalent of 100,000 feet up (30,500 meters)," she added.

Engineers built the copter’s twin, counter-rotating blades to "bite into the thin Martian atmosphere at almost 3,000 rpm -- about 10 times the rate of a helicopter on Earth," said a NASA statement.

The helicopter is equipped with "solar cells to charge its lithium-ion batteries, and a heating mechanism to keep it warm through the cold Martian nights."

Controllers on Earth will command the Mars Helicopter, which was designed to receive and interpret commands from the ground.

Plans are being laid for a 30-day flight test, with five flights going incrementally further each time, up to a few hundred yards (meters). Its first flight calls for a brief vertical climb of 10 feet (three meters), followed by hovering for a half minute.

NASA views the copter as a "high-risk, high-reward technology demonstration," it said. If successful, it could be a model for scouting on future Mars missions, able to access places the human-built rovers cannot reach.

If it fails, it will not impact the Mars 2020 mission.

"The ability to see clearly what lies beyond the next hill is crucial for future explorers," said NASA’s Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for the science mission directorate.

"We already have great views of Mars from the surface as well as from orbit. With the added dimension of a bird’s-eye view from a ‘marscopter,’ we can only imagine what future missions will achieve."

Snapchat dials back redesign that riled users

Snapchat dials back redesign that riled users

Snapchat dials back redesign that riled users
Snapchat got some of its old look back on Friday in an update to a major redesign that riled users and caused growth to stumble.

Software changes to the Snapchat application for Apple mobile devices put "Snaps" and "Chats" back in reverse chronological order and move Stories from friends back to the right side of the app.

Snapchat also added a subscriptions feed devoted to content from celebrities, publishers and other professional sources.

The modifications undo some changes made when parent company Snap overhauled the app late last year in the name of broadening the appeal of the youth-oriented social network

"We are now focused on optimizing the redesign based on our ongoing experimentation and learning," Snap co-founder and chief executive Evan Spiegel said last week during an earnings call with analysts.

Users had complained about the abrupt overhaul of the service. An online petition calling on Snap to undo the overhaul had more than 1.2 million signatures as of Friday.

"Many users have found that it has not made the app easier to use, but has in fact made many features more difficult," the petition on change.org states.

The update separated "media content" from that of friends, a move aimed at avoiding problems faced by social media rivals Facebook and Twitter over the proliferation of misinformation.

But a flurry of Twitter comments took issue with the move by Snapchat, which became a favorite of teens for its disappearing messages but also offers content from various media partners.

Snapchat’s parent company took a blow when reality star Kylie Jenner temporarily turned away from the service, broadcasting her dislike of the overhaul on Twitter.

The Snapchat update that started rolling out on Friday was intended to hold true to the idea of keeping personal content separate while making it easy for users to view professional content displayed in a "subscriptions" box.

Snap’s revenue and user growth in the first three months of this year fell short of investor expectations, sending the share price to a record low.

"Snapchat’s slowing growth and lower-than-expected revenue are, in part, likely due to the app’s redesign disappointing another key group: millennials," YouGov research writer Paul Hiebert said in an online post.

Since the Snapchat redesign late last year, its image has sunk along with its satisfaction rating in the eyes of US users ranging in age from 18 years old to 30 years old, according to YouGov survey results.

President stresses easy accessibility of assistive technology for disabled people

President stresses easy accessibility of assistive technology for disabled people

President stresses easy accessibility of assistive technology for disabled people
President Mamnoon Hussain Tuesday stressed upon promotion and easy accessibility of assistive technology for the rehabilitation of people suffering from disabilities or weakness, which was imperative for the progress and development of society.

The president said all human beings were equally important and valuable, therefore, the people suffering from any kind of disability or weakness could not be left behind at the mercy of fate.

He was addressing the inauguration of consultative meeting on ‘Improving Access to Assistive Technology’ organized by the Ministry of Health Services, Regulations and Coordination in collaboration with the World Health Organization.

The president asserted that Pakistan played a leading role at the international level for provision of “assistive products” to people suffering from physical disabilities, including introduction of a list of essential assistive products at the World Health Assembly, and lauded efforts of the federal minister for health.

He observed that Pakistan had the honour of being the first country to present the list of essential assistive products at the international level. “I hope that after the adoption of this resolution in World Health Organization (WHO), necessary equipment will be easily available to all disabled persons around the world and Pakistan’s services, in this regard, will also be commended at the global level,” he added.

He maintained that Pakistan had a very positive and progressive vision regarding the rehabilitation and provision of health facilities to the disabled persons. “The Government of Pakistan has taken numerous steps in this respect, including Prime Minister’s Health Insurance Programme and other welfare projects. The government is making all possible efforts to provide health and medical facilities to the masses,” he added.

The president said destitute and low income segments of society were availing free medical treatment facilities from the government and private institutions through those measures.

Those programmes were broad-based and many countries from across the world had shown their willingness to benefit from those initiatives, he added.

President Mamnoon noted that the world was facing numerous challenges and problems and the number of disable persons was continuously increasing due to growing population, increase in elderly people, national disasters, warfare and terrorism.

“Under the circumstances, no society could afford to overlook its responsibility towards the disabled persons. Therefore, continuous research is imperative to make them a productive part of the society,” he added.

Similarly, he said, exact data was required so that the community could also contribute towards the national development.

Access to assistive technology was like a blessing and there was a need that measures might be taken to ensure its access to the concerned, he added.

The president assured that the government would continue to play its role towards creating synergy between research and development apart from developing programmes and strategies.

“We believe that it is our primary responsibility to provide state of the art facilities and products to all of our citizens, especially those having disabilities. The Government of Pakistan is fully aware of its responsibility and is making all possible efforts towards this noble cause,” he added.

The president noted that the consultative meeting was held with a noble objective of bringing the disabled persons into mainstream of the society.

“I would like that in addition to improving the production and accessibility of assistive products this platform may also focus on making these products available at an affordable price,” he stressed.

The president also underlined the importance of research & development and the training of experts and human resource in the field.

The endeavours, he added, would not only help in achieving the targets of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2030 but also facilitate in providing equal opportunities to all members of the society.

Minister for National Health Services, Regulation & Coordination Saira Afzal Tarar stressed upon the collective efforts by all the stakeholders, regional and world bodies to serve the humanity. She said the Government of Pakistan achieved different targets in the health sector with hectic efforts.

She called upon the technical people and the experts to come forward and assist the governments in tackling the issues for rehabilitation of people with disabilities.

The president also presented an official letter of the World Health Organization to Dr Sana Hafeez designating her as Global Champion on Assistive Technology.

Dr Sana also recounted her experiences and ordeals in her life after developing disability due to a tragic incident.

WhatsApp raises minimum age in Europe to 16

WhatsApp raises minimum age in Europe to 16

WhatsApp raises minimum age in Europe to 16
WhatsApp, the popular messaging service owned by Facebook Inc, is raising its minimum age from 13 to 16 in Europe to help it comply with new data privacy rules coming into force next month.

WhatsApp will ask European users to confirm they are at least 16 years old when they are prompted to agree new terms of service and a privacy policy provided by a new WhatsApp Ireland Ltd entity in the next few weeks.

It is not clear how or if the age limit will be checked given the limited data requested and held by the service.

Facebook, which has a separate data policy, is taking a different approach to teens aged between 13 and 15 in order to comply with the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) law.

It is asking them to nominate a parent or guardian to give permission for them to share information on the platform, otherwise they will not see a fully personalized version of the social media platform.

But WhatsApp, which had more than 1.5 billion users in January according to Facebook, said in a blog post it was not asking for any new rights to collect personal information in the agreement it has created for the European Union.

“Our goal is simply to explain how we use and protect the limited information we have about you,” it said.

WhatsApp, founded in 2009, has come under pressure from some European governments in recent years because of its end-to-end encrypted messaging system and its plan to share more data with its parent, Facebook.

Facebook itself is under scrutiny from regulators and lawmakers around the world since disclosing last month that the personal information of millions of users wrongly ended up in the hands of political consultancy Cambridge Analytica, setting off wider concerns about how it handles user data.

WhatsApp’s minimum age of use will remain 13 years in the rest of the world, in line with its parent.

GDPR is the biggest overhaul of online privacy since the birth of the internet, giving Europeans the right to know what data is stored on them and the right to have it deleted.

Apple Inc and some other tech firms have said they plan to give people in the United States and elsewhere the same protections and rights that Europeans will gain.

European regulators have already disrupted a move by WhatsApp to change its policies to allow it to share users’ phone numbers and other information with Facebook to help improve the product and more effectively target ads.

WhatsApp suspended the change in Europe after widespread regulatory scrutiny. It said on Tuesday it still wanted to share the data at some point.

“As we have said in the past, we want to work closely with other Facebook companies in the future and we will keep you updated as we develop our plans,” it said.

Other changes announced by WhatsApp on Tuesday include allowing users to download a report detailing the data it holds on them, such as the make and model of the device they used, their contacts and groups and any blocked numbers.

“This feature will be rolling out to all users around the world on the newest version of the app,” it said.

The blog post also points to safety tips on the service, such as the ability to block unwanted users, and delete and report spam.
