ICC investigates Umar Akmal’s claim of being approached by bookies

ICC investigates Umar Akmal’s claim of being approached by bookies

Umar Akmal
Pakistan’s out-of-favour batsman Umar Akmal may find himself in hot water as he claimed that he was approached by bookmakers on several occasions for alleged corrupt activities.

Akmal, 28, said in a TV interview aired on Sunday evening that he was offered $200,000 by fixers to leave two deliveries in one of the matches. He also claimed that he was offered money to skip matches against India.

“I was once offered $200,000 for leaving two deliveries. I was also offered to skip matches against India.” Akmal said in the interview.

Pakistani batsman also said that he was approached during ICC World Cup, including the 2015 edition played in Australia and New Zealand.

His revelation has raised questions if the batsman had reported about this to anti-corruption officials. This correspondent spoke to multiple officials involved with the team during last few years and none had info if the batsman had reported the approach to relevant officials.

According to ICC anti-corruption code 2.4.4 and 2.4.5, players are bound to report all the corrupt approaches made to them during any event and failure of doing so carry a minimum punishment of five years.

The International Cricket Council has launched an investigation into the matter and has expressed desire to speak to Umar Akmal.

“The ICC is aware of a recent interview given by Umar Akmal. Whilst we not that there is no suggestion that any fix actually took place, the ICC is reliant on players to report any corrupt approaches in timely manner,” said an ICC spokesman.

“We are taking Akmal’s comments very seriously. We have launched an investigation and wish to speak to Mr Akmal as matter of urgency,” the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board's (Anti Corruption Unit) has served a notice to Akmal and summoned him to appear before it on June 27.

Colombia beat Poland to keep World Cup hopes alive

Colombia beat Poland to keep World Cup hopes alive

Colombia beat Poland to keep World Cup hopes alive
Radamel Falcao, Yerry Mina and Juan Cuadrado scored their maiden World Cup goals as stylish Colombia boosted their last 16 hopes with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Poland on Sunday.

In a match destined to see the loser sent home after the group stages, Colombia overcame a nervous start against Adam Nawalka’s men to move up to third place in Group H, one point behind Japan and Senegal.

The disappointing Poland became the first European side eliminated from the tournament.

The South Americans’ bid for a place in the last 16 will be determined by the results from their final game with Senegal, who drew 2-2 with Japan earlier in the day.

Colombia’s march to the quarter-finals in Brazil four years ago came thanks to James Rodriguez’s six-goal tally for ‘Los Cafeteros’.

And days after a troublesome calf injury restricted him to a half-hour cameo role as 10-man Colombia stumbled to a 2-1 defeat against Japan, the Bayern Munich midfielder was back to his best.

Starting alongside Juan Quintero and Cuadrado on the right, Colombia’s ultra-offensive starting line-up was a forewarning.

After riding a tense start that forced Mina and then Wilmar Barrios to react quickly to thwart early threats from Robert Lewandowski, Colombia eventually got into their stride.

Cuadrado’s trickery

Cuadrado was wasteful on several occasions when finding space deep on the right flank.

The Juventus winger’s trickery would eventually pay dividends, but it was Falcao - who has dreamed all his life of scoring a World Cup goal - who turned on the style, dancing through the Polish defence to win the corner that led to Colombia’s opener.

Rodriguez’s short corner eventually found Quintero, whose smart through ball back to Rodriguez gave him time and space to curl a perfect left-footed cross that Mina rose to header powerfully past Szczesny on 40 minutes.

Colombia resumed in positive fashion, Cuadrado holding up well to set up Falcao for a first-time drive that sailed over Szczesny’s crossbar.

A Colombia counter saw Falcao’s drive from the edge of the area deflected out for a corner.

Nawalka replaced Dawid Kownacki with the more experienced Kamil Grosicki and the switch almost paid dividends.

Only the bravery of goalkeeper David Ospina saved Colombia from conceding what looked like the equaliser when he rushed out to block from Lewandowski after the Bayern Munich striker did well to get a shot away from a long ball from midfield.

Poland threatened again, but when Lewandowski got his head to a cross into the area he was marked by both Mina and Davinson Sanchez.

Colombia, however, were not to be denied.

When right-back Sanitago Arias found Quintero, the midfielder sliced Poland’s defence apart with a low pass that found Falcao on the run before he beat Szczesny down low with the outside of his right boot.

Five minutes later, Rodriguez produced arguably the assist of the night, drawing several Polish players on the left flank before somehow finding Cuadrado on the run with a superb cross-field pass that the pacey winger tucked away.

World Cup 2018: Japan come back twice against Senegal to draw 2-2

Japan and Senegal remain well placed to reach the knockout stage of the World Cup - and a last-16 date with England or Belgium - after an entertaining draw in Ekaterinburg.

Sadio Mane put Senegal ahead from close range after an awful mistake by Eiji Kawashima, the ball flying past the Japan keeper after his attempted punched clearance hit the Liverpool forward.

Japan were level before half-time through Takashi Inui's lovely curling finish, before Yuya Osako hit the crossbar.

Nineteen-year-old defender Moussa Wague thought he had sealed Senegal's second straight Group H win with a fine finish from an angle but substitute Keisuke Honda salvaged a point for Japan moments after coming on.

Japan and Senegal have four points after two games, while Group H rivals Poland and Colombia are both chasing their first points of the tournament when they meet in Kazan at 19:00 BST.

Despite another point, Senegal will be disappointed they could not follow up their 2-1 win over Poland last week by becoming the first African side to win two group games since Ghana in 2006.

But 16 years on from their debut World Cup, the Teranga Lions continue to win new fans in Russia.

While Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia are already making plans to return home after failing to secure a point, Senegal can still ensure Africa has at least one representative in the last 16.

However, Aliou Cisse will be frustrated his players failed to build on Mane's opener after Kawashima's howler.

Senegal were well in control but failed to build on their strong start and Inui's smart finish, after Yuto Nagatomo created the chance, saw Japan draw level with their first shot on target.

Even after Wague restored Senegal's advantage with a sweeping finish, they were unable to see the game out - keeper Khadim N'Diaye's failed clearance leading to Honda's equaliser.

In 2002, the likes of Henri Camara and El Hadji Diouf helped Senegal reach the quarter-finals under Bruno Metsu. If Senegal's class of 2018 hope to emulate that achievement they will have to cut out the mistakes.

England hat-trick hero Kane basks in World Cup rout

Hat-trick hero Harry Kane says "it´s all coming together" for England at the World Cup after Gareth Southgate´s side sailed into the last 16 with a 6-1 rout of Panama on Sunday.

Kane´s treble and two goals from John Stones, with Jesse Lingard also on the scoresheet, meant England joined Belgium on six points at the top of Group G ahead of the match between the two teams on Thursday.

Kane said: "I´m very proud. Not many players get to score a hat-trick in the World Cup.

"We have to enjoy this. It´s not every day we get to go through after two games."

He said his third goal, which came from a Ruben Loftus-Cheek shot that deflected off the English captain´s heel into the net, "was one of the luckiest of my career".

His five goals took him to the top of the World Cup Golden Boot scoring chart with five goals in two games ahead of the four scored by Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku.

"It´s going well, there´s still a long way to go, the most important thing is winning games," Kane said.

"There´s a lot of good players behind me, hopefully I can take it into Thursday´s game."

Earlier, Kane told BBC TV he was "proud of the boys".

"We knew it was going to be tough but it´s all coming together. It´s a brilliant result, fantastic to be through and to do it in this way is great."

The Tottenham Hotspur striker said England fans were justified in dreaming of winning the World Cup for the first time since 1966.

"We´re not getting too ahead of ourselves. We´ve got to keep it going but, yes, you have to believe. If you want to achieve anything in life you have to believe.

"We´ve got to stick together, stick to our game plan."

FIFA Worldcup : Mexico Beat South Korea

FIFA Worldcup : Mexico Beat South Korea

FIFA Worldcup : Mexico Beat South Korea
Javier Hernandez scored his 50th international goal to help Mexico take a big step towards the last 16 of the World Cup with an impressive win over South Korea, despite Son Heung-min’s stunning late strike.

Having upset defending champions Germany in their opening game in Group F, Mexico proved again they will be a test for any side should they reach the knockout stages.

They took the lead through Carlos Vela’s penalty – the 14th of the tournament already – on 26 minutes after Jang Hyun-Soo’s handball.Although they dominated possession against lacklustre opponents, Mexico also displayed their thrilling counter-attacking game with their second goal, when West Ham striker Hernandez added a neat finish to Hirving Lozano’s surging run.As South Korea’s sole threat, it was fitting that Tottenham striker Son gave his side fleeting hope in added time with a sublime, curling strike from 25 yards.

Mexico will reach the last 16 if Sweden beat Germany in Saturday’s final game.

Belgium on verge of World Cup last 16 after crushing Tunisia

Belgium on verge of World Cup last 16 after crushing Tunisia

Belgium on verge of World Cup last 16 after crushing Tunisia
Two goals each for Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard and one for Michy Batshuayi swept Belgium to a 5-2 victory over Tunisia on Saturday that put them in command of World Cup Group G and underlined their status as one of the tournament favourites.

After racking up two wins and a goal difference of plus-six Belgium are virtually assured of advancing but it is not yet guaranteed - and they will be aware that they will need to tighten up at the back to handle the threat of the big guns deeper into the tournament.

Should they lose their final game against England, currently on three, and pointless Panama somehow beat England and Tunisia, all three would have six points and the top two would be decided on goal difference.

Tunisia, also without a point after two matches, having extended their 40-year World Cup winless run to 13 games, are also still in with a theoretical chance of making it on through three points.

Belgium were much the better team, looking dangerous on almost every attack, but they were seriously aided and abetted by some ragged defending and non-existing marking from their opponents.

Syam Ben Youssef needlessly crashed into Hazard to give away a sixth-minute penalty, which he calmly converted.

Ali Maaloul then gave the ball away at halfway after 16 minutes, Dries Mertens drove forward before rolling it into the path of Lukaku to plant it low into the corner.

Tunisia hit back two minutes later with a Dylan Bronn header as Belgium´s own sometimes shaky defending was exposed but another misplaced Tunisian pass enabled Thomas Meunier to feed his goal-hungry striker as Lukaku clipped in to make it 3-1 in stoppage time.

Following his double in the 3-0 win over Panama it took the him to four goals for the tournament, level with Portugal´s Cristiano Ronaldo, and made him Belgium´s highest scorer at a single World Cup – after one-and-a-half games.

An inch-perfect Kevin de Bruyne pass sent Hazard clear for his second six minutes after the restart, the midfielder showing superb balance and skill to round keeper Farouk Ben Mustapha and tuck home to effectively end the contest.

Substitute Batshuayi missed a hat-trick of fantastic chances within five minutes before finally finding the target in the 90th with a good finish.

Belgium were generally on cruise-control for the final half hour, though the North Africans had the last word as Wahbi Khazri scored in stoppage time.

India beat Pakistan by 4-0 in Hockey Champions Trophy

India beat Pakistan by 4-0 in Hockey Champions Trophy

Pakistan face India in Hockey Champions Trophy opener
India defeated Pakistan by 4-0 in the opening match of the Men's Hockey Champions Trophy today in Breda.

Pakistan put forwarded additional player by withdrawing its goal keeper in the last five minutes of the game. The move backfired as it provided India an opportunity to score two more goals in the last stage of the game.

India, who have never won a Champions Trophy title in hockey, was looking to put behind their miserable Commonwealth Games campaign in the match against arch-rivals Pakistan, who looked for their fourth Champions Trophy title.

Earlier before this match, Pakistan faced India in the Champions Trophy was during the 2014 edition of the tournament, where Pakistan beat India 4-3 in the semi-final after a nail-biting encounter. Despite losing the final to Germany 2-0, Pakistan's performance in the semi-final is still seen as one of their more memorable performances in the tournament.

Pakistan won the inaugural edition of the Champions Trophy held in Lahore in 1978 when they beat Australia in the final.

Four years later, Pakistan picked up their second title beating West Germany in Karachi. The last time Pakistan picked up the Champions Trophy title was in 1994 in Lahore, when they beat Germany (7–6) on penalty strokes.

Not only do Pakistan have three titles under their belt, they have finished as runner-up seven times in the tournament in 1983, 1984, 1988, 1991, 1996, 1998, and 2014.

On the other hand, the best India have fared in the tournament was the runners-up finish at the 2016 event in London, losing to Australia in a shoot-out.

Switzerland beat Serbia to join Brazil in Group E qualification contention

Switzerland beat Serbia to join Brazil in Group E qualification contention

Switzerland beat Serbia to join Brazil in Group E qualification contention
A last-minute Xherdan Shaqiri breakaway goal handed Switzerland victory Friday as they came from behind to defeat Serbia 2-1 in Kaliningrad.

The win puts Switzerland in pole position to make it out of a tough Group E that contains five-times winners Brazil but they were pushed all the way by the Serbs.

It was a sweet victory for Shaqiri and fellow Swiss goalscorer Granit Xhaka, who along with team-mate Valon Belrami were booed relentlessly by Serbia’s fans throughout.

Shaqiri, Xhaka and Belrami trace their roots to Kosovo, a former province of Serbia, a fact which had stoked tensions before the match.

Both Shaqiri and Xhaka pointedly celebrated their goals by making an eagle gesture with their hands, viewed as a symbol of defiance.

Serbia raced out of the blocks, funnelling possession to Southampton winger Dusan Tadic on the right flank, who troubled Switzerland with his crossing all match.

An Aleksandar Mitrovic header forced a smart save from Swiss keeper Yann Sommer after four minutes.

Seconds later, Tadic took the ball past left-back Ricardo Rodriguez, cut back on his favoured left foot and delivered a majestic cross that Mitrovic duly buried with his head.

In a frenetic first half, Switzerland had more of the ball but were sloppy with it, giving away possession in advanced positions and sending Serbia on the break.

Lazio’s highly rated Sergej Milinkovic-Savic fizzed a right-footed shot narrowly wide of Sommer’s right post on 15 minutes, and Mitrovic almost scored with a spectacular bicycle kick that went the same way minutes later.

Switzerland, who came to Russia ranked ahead of the likes of France and Spain, felt their way into the game as the first-half progressed.

On the half-hour mark, Steven Zuber cleverly teed up Blerim Dzemaili but the Hoffenheim man got his feet in a muddle and Vladimir Stojkovic was able to parry away.

But it was Serbia, who beat Costa Rica 1-0 in their Group E opener, who nearly went in two up.

Nemanja Matic missed a glorious chance to double the lead just before the break when Tadic’s in-swinging corner found him unmarked at the back post but the Manchester United midfielder couldn’t sort his feet out.

Matic said during the build-up the team were expecting a “hellish” encounter with the Swiss, who in their game with Brazil fouled star forward Neymar 10 times alone.

Switzerland grew in stature after the break and were rewarded with a spectacular equaliser courtesy of Xhaka’s 52nd-minute piledriver.

They had the better chances in the second period, with Shaqiri’s curling effort from the edge of the area grazing Stojkovic’s bar on the hour mark.

Coach Vladimir Petkovic brought on attackers Breel Embolo and Mario Gavranovic in a bid to force a winner, and Gavranovic forced a smart save from Stojkovic from a close range effort with 10 minutes remaining.

But it was Stoke City winger Shaqiri who struck the decisive blow, breaking through Serbia’s offside trap to slot home calmly as the 90 minutes wound down.

Serbia will now need something from their final Group E match against Brazil, while a draw against Costa Rica would see Switzerland through.

Musa Secures Victory For Nigeria Over Iceland
Ahmed Musa has scored again to give Nigeria 2-0 lead against Iceland late in the second half in Volgograd.

In the 49th minute, Victor Moses raced down the sideline and sent a cross into the box for Ahmed Musa. He controlled it nicely with his first touch, and then used his second to slam it home.Musa nearly got a second when his shot caromed off the top bar. Then a moment later, in the 75th minute, he latched onto a long ball, beat a defender and then the keeper, and poked the ball into an unguarded net.

With eight minutes to go, Iceland seemed to have earned a chance to close the gap. When Alfred Finnbogason of Iceland was brought down with a whack on the calf from behind, there was initially no call. But a video review determined that it was a penalty.

Roy runs riot again as England go 4-0 up over Australia

Roy runs riot again as England go 4-0 up over Australia

Roy runs riot again as England go 4-0 up over Australia
Jason Roy scored his second hundred of the series as England beat Australia by six wickets at Chester-le-Street on Thursday to move within one win of their first-ever 5-0 one-day international clean sweep of their arch-rivals.

England, fresh from their 481 for six -- the highest men´s ODI total of all time -- in a crushing 242-run win at Trent Bridge on Tuesday, ´only´ needed 311 at the Riverside.

But what was still England´s second highest total batting second to win a match at this level, behind their 350 for three against New Zealand at Trent Bridge three years ago, was made to look insignificant as in-form openers Roy (101) and Jonny Bairstow (79) put on 174.

"I´m trying to control my innings, pace it so I can set some good foundations for the end," Roy told Sky Sports. "Unfortunately I couldn´t kick on today."

´Solid cricket´

England finished on 314 for four, with Jos Buttler 54 not out, as they won with 32 balls to spare. "We played pretty solid cricket," said England captain Eoin Morgan.

England, the world´s top-ranked side in this format, will now look to surpass their previous best ODI series result against world champions Australia -- 4-0, including a washout, in a five-match home campaign in 2012 -- at Old Trafford on Sunday.

This was Australia´s 15th defeat in 17 completed ODIs as once again a side missing six first-choice players in banned star batsmen Steve Smith and David Warner, as well as injured quicks Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood and sidelined all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, failed to truly extend 2019 World Cup hosts England.

"We were 30 or 40 short in the end," said Tim Paine, the Australia captain. "We came here with an inexperienced side. It´s not an excuse but they (England) are the best side in the world and they are really hard to beat."

Roy, who ran himself out for 82 on Tuesday, was quickly into his stride with two fours off successive Billy Stanlake deliveries. Roy, following a 120 in the first ODI at The Oval, his Surrey home ground, completed another hundred when he hoisted recalled off-spinner Nathan Lyon for a huge six that saw him to the landmark in 83 balls.

But two balls later his sliced drive off Lyon found Shaun Marsh at backward point. And 174 for one became 183 for two when Bairstow, trying to run Stanlake to third man, guided a catch to wicket-keeper Paine.

´When it rains, it pours´

But Australia´s series was summed up when Alex Hales, on 17, edged medium-pacer Michael Neser only for Paine to drop a regulation two-handed catch. "I´m trying to enjoy it but when it rains, it pours," said Paine. "You have to catch those but it just popped out."

Earlier, Aaron Finch (100) and Marsh (101) both hit hundreds in Australia´s 310 for eight, with Marsh´s following his 131 against England in Cardiff last weekend. But their failure to press on cost Australia a truly imposing total.

Their score was still a Riverside ODI record, surpassing England´s 307 for five against New Zealand in 2008. Fast bowler Mark Wood took two wickets in an over on his Durham home ground before left-arm paceman David Willey grabbed three in five balls on his way to figures of four for 43.

Finch and Travis Head (63) got Australia off to a sound start and they were 225 for one come the start of the 40th over. Yet they were three wickets down when it ended.

Wood broke a partnership of 124 when Finch was lbw to a ball that cut back, before he bowled Marcus Stoinis in similar fashion. A ball after Alex Carey holed out off Willey, Marsh fell when he found Roy at long-on who, before he stepped over the boundary, reverse-flicked the ball back several yards to debutant paceman Craig Overton, who completed an extraordinary catch.

"I was lucky to have someone to throw that catch to, so well done to the big lad Craig Overton for getting the yards in to get there," said Roy. Paine survived the hat-trick, but two balls later Neser was caught behind off Willey.

Messi's Argentina staring at World Cup exit after Croatia humbling

Messi's Argentina staring at World Cup exit after Croatia humbling

Messi's Argentina staring at World Cup exit after Croatia humbling
NIZHNY NOVGOROD: Lionel Messi´s Argentina were on the brink of a humiliating World Cup exit on Thursday after they were humbled 3-0 by Croatia on a dramatic day at the World Cup that saw the European side join France in the knockout rounds.

Argentina knew they had to chase a win in Nizhny Novgorod after their disappointing 1-1 opening draw against Iceland but instead collapsed in the second half to leave their campaign in tatters.

A horrendous mistake by goalkeeper Willy Caballero and two further goals from Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic mean the two-time former champions have to rely on an unlikely sequence of results if they are to progress in Russia.

It was the heaviest defeat for the two-time world champions in the first round group stages of a World Cup tournament since they lost 6-1 to Czechoslovakia in 1958. The result spelt another night of misery for Barcelona star Messi, who missed a penalty in Argentina´s opening match against Iceland.

In stark contrast, his eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who last month won his fifth Champions League winner´s medal, has already scored four goals in Russia and looks a shoo-in to win his sixth world player of the year award.

Croatia sit at the top of Group D with six points. Iceland have one point, the same as Argentina, and Nigeria have no points, but both teams have a game in hand on the South Americans.

"I had to devise a plan for this match. If I had set things up differently, things might have turned out much better. I don´t think it´s realistic to put the burden on Caballero (for his mistake)," said Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli.

"I think because of the reality of the Argentinian squad, it clouds Leo´s brilliance. Leo is limited because the team doesn´t gel ideally with him as it should. As coaches we need to realise these things and try to deal with them and I´m the one that needs to accept it."

Yet Sampaoli´s remarks, implying that Messi´s team-mates were to blame, drew a blunt response from normally affable striker Sergio Aguero, hinting at tensions in the Argentine camp.

"Let him say what he wants," Aguero said, when asked to comment on Sampaoli´s verdict. It is the first time that Croatia have progressed past the World Cup group stages since their third-placed debut in 1998.

"From day one I´ve trusted my team. I didn´t believe we would be through after the second game, but I believed we would be through eventually," said Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic.

"Argentina weren´t confused, we were excellent." But a fierce post-mortem was already under way in Argentina, where the press tore into Messi and his team.

"Catastrophe against Croatia, Argentina disappoints and is on the way out of the World Cup," the Clarin newspaper wrote on its website.

France qualify

France, who won the tournament on home in 1998, earlier joined Russia and Uruguay in the last 16 with a 1-0 win against Peru, who cannot now progress from the group stage after two defeats.

Paris Saint-German star Kylian Mbappe tapped into an empty net in the 34th minute in Yekaterinburg and the South Americans were unable to respond. Mbappe is now the youngest French goalscorer at a World Cup, aged 19 years and 183 days, beating David Trezeguet´s record of 20 years and 246 days.

Denmark, also in France´s Group C, stayed on course for the knockout rounds after drawing 1-1 with Australia in the early game of the day in Samara. Christian Eriksen´s half-volley was cancelled out by Mile Jedinak´s VAR-assisted penalty after Yussuf Poulsen´s handball, giving Denmark four points, while Australia are stuck on one point.

Australia coach Bert van Marwijk said the "last piece of the puzzle" -- goals -- was missing for his side who had several chances to win the game, leaving their survival in the balance.

"We had chances to win and we deserved to win, so I´m disappointed," the Dutchman said.

Russia have defied pre-tournament predictions that they would struggle by qualifying for the knockout round for the first time since the Soviet era. They will be joined by Uruguay, condemning Mohamed Salah´s Egypt and Saudi Arabia to an early exit from Group A.

Morocco will also be leaving Russia after the first round following their defeat by European champions Portugal, who are level with Spain on four points at the top of Group B.

Pressure on Messi against Croatia after Ronaldo scores again

Pressure on Messi against Croatia after Ronaldo scores again
VOLGOGRAD, RUSSIA: Lionel Messi is under increased pressure to redeem himself when Argentina face Croatia in Thursday´s pivotal match after eternal rival Cristiano Ronaldo scored his fourth goal of the World Cup to send Morocco packing.

France will be looking for a second World Cup Group C win against Peru Thursday while Australia need to bounce back from their heart-breaking defeat to Les Bleus against Denmark.

Messi´s teammates have rallied around their superstar captain after his spot-kick was saved in the 1-1 draw against minnows Iceland on Saturday. Messi is bearing the weight of expectations as Argentina seek a first World Cup trophy since 1986, desperate to crown his glittering career with a major international tournament success.

However so far in Russia, Messi has been overshadowed by Ronaldo, who took his tournament goal tally to four on Tuesday with the winner in Portugal´s 1-0 defeat of Morocco, which condemned the Africans to an early exit.

A defeat against the Luka Modric-led Croatians in Nizhny Novgorod could see Argentina, unthinkably, flirting with a first group stage exit since 2002. "We are all with him, he knows that he can count on the support of all of us more than ever," said Argentina striker Paulo Dybala of Messi.

"We are here to help him every moment, and of course we will be at his side," Dybala added.

Croatia under a cloud

Croatia secured three points in their 2-0 win against Nigeria in their opening game but enter the match under a cloud. AC Milan striker Nikola Kalinic was sent home from Russia for reportedly refusing to come on as a substitute, though coach Zlatko Dalic claimed the AC Milan man had a back injury.

Fancied France could only edge past Australia 2-1 courtesy of an Antoine Griezmann penalty and an own goal in their Group C opener but have vowed to ramp up the intensity against Peru in Yekaterinburg.

"We took stock of what was done well or not so well and all agree that we will have to increase our physical intensity and improve our attitude in general," said France vice-captain and central defender Raphael Varane.

"Other teams (among the favourites) did not win or even lost. We won, but we know that there are things to improve on. We know what direction we need to go in."

The defeat to France mean the Socceroos are targeting a win against Denmark in Samara on Thursday to have a realistic chance of qualifying from the group stages.

Captain Mile Jedinak, who scored from the penalty spot against France, says improving on a disciplined performance and not obsessing over great Dane Christian Eriksen will be key against Denmark, who squeezed past Peru 1-0 in their opening match.

"We know (Eriksen) is a fantastic player and obviously he´s got a huge role to play for them," said Jedinak. "But we´re not trying to focus on that. We´ll definitely focus on them as whole and as a collective."

Wednesday´s other matches saw Spain edge past Iran 1-0 thanks to Diego Costa´s fortunate third goal in two matches which put them level at the top Group B with Portugal

Iran, who had a precious second-half equaliser ruled out for offside by VAR, lie just a point behind the Iberian pair and can still guarantee qualification for the knockout stages for the first time by beating Portugal on Monday.

Uruguay knocked out Saudi Arabia Wednesday with a 1-0 win which confirmed the South Americans and hosts Russia as qualifiers from Group A with a game to spare.

The result means an early exit for Mohammed Salah´s Egypt who will be heading to Volgograd airport along with the Saudis for a plane home after their clash in the historic city formerly known as Stalingrad on Monday.

Ahmed Shehzad tested positive for doping: sources
Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad tested positive for a dope test, sources informed.

Shehzad can face a ban of at least three months from international cricket for violating the anti-doping laws. The opener, however, reserves the option to give second sample test.

Sources informed that Shehzad's test was taken during a recent domestic cricket tournament.

The Pakistan Cricket Board authorities gave the unfortunate news in a meeting held between selection committee and Head Coach Mickey Arthur on discussing the probable squad for Zimbabwe tour.

It is learned that the PCB has decided to not consider Shehzad for selection for the upcoming tour. Meanwhile, Muhammad Hafeez and Shan Masood have become strong contenders for the opening slot.

Sources have informed that World Anti-Doping Agency will decide action against the Pakistani opener. Shehzad had scored 14 and 24 runs in his last matches against Scotland.

Later, a PCB spokesperson confirmed that one of its players has been tested positive but added that it can't reveal the name of the player till the verification of the test reports as per the ICC rules.

Suarez sends Uruguay into last 16 after 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia

Suarez sends Uruguay into last 16 after 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia
Rostov-on-Don: Uruguay booked their place in the World Cup knockout stage along with Russia on Wednesday, as Luis Suarez scored the winner on his 100th international appearance in a 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in Rostov-on-Don.

The South Americans take on the hosts in their final Group A match on June 25 with top spot on the line, while Egypt and Saudi Arabia have been eliminated after both suffered back-to-back defeats.
Russia and Uruguay will face one of the top two from Group B in the last 16 — either Portugal, Spain or Iran.

The 31-year-old Suarez, whose previous two World Cups both ended in bans after his infamous 2010 handball against Ghana and bite on Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini four years later, took advantage of a goalkeeping error by Mohammed Al-Owais to put Uruguay ahead midway through the first half.

Oscar Tabarez’s side missed plenty of opportunities to add further goals, but a toothless Saudi outfit never seriously looked like snatching a point.

Uruguay, semi-finalists eight years ago in South Africa, have now reached the knockout stage for the third straight time, while Saudi Arabia will try again in their search for a first World Cup win since 1994 in their final game against Mohamed Salah’s Egypt.

England post new ODI record total of 481-6 against Australia

England post new ODI record total of 481-6 against Australia

England post new ODI record total of 481-6
England posted the highest total ever scored in a men’s one-day international of 481 for six as they thrashed world champions Australia by 242 runs at Trent Bridge on Tuesday to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in a five-match series.

Alex Hales (147) and Jonny Bairstow (139) both hit hundreds as, for the second time in two years at Trent Bridge, England posted a new record ODI score following their 444 for three against Pakistan in 2016.

Bairstow’s hundred was his fourth in six ODIs while Hales’s century ended a run of low scores.

Meanwhile England captain Eoin Morgan became the country’s all-time leading run-scorer in this format during a 67 that featured a 21-ball fifty — England’s quickest in men’s ODIs.

This was Australia’s heaviest defeat at this level, in terms of runs, surpassing a 206-run loss to New Zealand in Adelaide in 1986.

By contrast, 2019 World Cup England were able to enjoy their biggest victory in the format as they topped their previous ODI best — 210-run success against New Zealand at Edgbaston in 2015.

Faced with a massive target of 482, Australia — missing star batsmen Steve Smith and David Warner, after the former captain and his deputy were both given year-long bans for their roles in March’s ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town — slumped to 239 all out with 13 overs remaining.

England spinners Adil Rashid (four for 47) and Moeen Ali (three for 28), with a mountain of runs behind them, shared seven wickets.

“To operate at that level throughout the whole game was as close to a complete performance as we’ve ever got to,” said Morgan at the presentation ceremony.

Hales, the man-of-the-match on his Nottinghamshire home ground, after making 171 for England against Pakistan at Trent Bridge two years ago, added: “That’s as good as it gets, both personally and from a team perspective”

But for a depleted Australia this was a chastening eighth loss in nine matches at this level against England, the world’s top-ranked ODI side.

“That was extraordinary, some of the best striking I’ve seen, to be honest, so you’ve got to take your hat off to the England boys,” said Australia captain Tim Paine. “That’s as hard a day’s cricket as I’ve had in 16 or 17 years.”

Jason Roy, who made 120 in England’s 38-run win in the second ODI in Cardiff on Sunday, could have had back-to-back hundreds but instead ran himself out on 82.

England might even have scored 500 had not Hales and Morgan — returning after being ruled out in Cardiff with a back spasm — been dismissed off successive balls.

Paine used eight bowlers before the 25th over, having sent England into bat.

But an attack missing injured Ashes-winning fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, struggled for line and length in overcast conditions on a ground favouring swing bowling, with medium-pacer Andrew Tye’s nine wicketless overs costing 100 runs.

Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar thought he had Bairstow lbw for 27 when he missed a sweep but the batsman’s review showed the ball, surprisingly, missing leg stump.

Bairstow, on 30, skyed a drive off Tye but Marcus Stoinis failed to hold an extremely tough chance as he ran back from mid-on.

Australia, however, were gifted a wicket when Roy ran himself out going for a needless second run.

It was off Australia’s eighth bowler, left-arm wrist spinner D’Arcy Short, that Bairstow hit a huge six over deep midwicket to reach a 69-ball hundred including 11 fours and four sixes.

Bairstow eventually hammered Agar to Richardson at deep midwicket.

Hales’s 92-ball blazing innings, featuring 16 fours and five sixes, ended when he was caught in the deep off Jhye Richardson.

On the next ball Morgan, whose tally of 5,443 ODI runs for England in 180 match took him past Ian Bell’s 5416 in 161 — also holed out.

Russia sour Salah's return to close in on last 16

Russia sour Salah's return to close in on last 16

Russia sour Salah's return to close in on last 16
The return of Mohammad Salah from injury couldn't prevent World Cup hosts Russia virtually sealing their place in the last 16 by beating Egypt 3-1 on Tuesday.

An own goal by Egypt captain Ahmed Fathy opened the floodgates on a sodden night in Saint Petersburg before goals from Denis Cheryshev and Artem Dzyuba furthered Russian hopes they can defy pre-tournament expectations with a deep run into the latter stages.

Salah did net Egypt's first goal at a World Cup since 1990 from the penalty spot after he had been hauled down 17 minutes from time, but it was too little, too late for the Pharaohs.

Russia will be guaranteed a place in the last 16 and Egypt eliminated unless Saudi Arabia beat Uruguay on Wednesday.

Salah was making his first appearance since injuring his left shoulder when falling heavily after being dragged to the ground by Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos in the Champions League final just over three weeks ago.

His presence in the starting line-up after sitting out Friday's 1-0 defeat to Uruguay provoked a feverish excitement from the thousands of Egyptian fans that poured into the 65,000-capacity Saint Petersburg stadium to almost even up the numbers in the stands with the hosts.

However, Russia had enjoyed a far more positive start in thrashing Saudi Arabia 5-0 to snap a seven-game run without a win heading into the tournament and their greater confidence showed early on.

Aleksandr Golovin and Cheryshev were at the heart of most of Russia's best moves against the Saudis and both came close to breaking the deadlock with long-range strikes.

Salah looked far from the player who scored 44 goals in his debut season for Liverpool and former Chelsea left-back Yuri Zhirkov wasn't afraid to test his fitness with a series of robust challenges.

But Zhirkov's best piece of defending was a last-ditch tackle that prevented Salah a simple tap in at the back post.

It took 40 minutes for the Premier League's Golden Boot winner to have an attempt on goal as the ball fell kindly on the edge of the area, but even on his favoured left foot his effort curled beyond Igor Akinfeev's far post.

Shorn of Salah at his best and facing the hosts, Egypt had an uphill task as it was without gifting Russia the initiative as they did in calamitous fashion at the start of the second-half.

There appeared little danger when Roman Zobnin's off-target shot dribbled towards goal, but under pressure from Dzyuba, Fathy threw an outstretched right leg towards the ball and turned it into his own net.

Having got the bit of luck they needed, Russia showed they have the quality to trouble more fancied nations with a brilliantly worked second that was swept home by Cheryshev for his third goal of the World Cup from Mario Fernandes's cross.

Three minutes later it was 3-0 as the towering 6ft 4in (1.96 metre) Dzyuba demonstrated quick feet to free himself inside the area before slotting low past a helpless Mohamed El-Shenawy.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system proved its worth to give Egypt a glimmer of hope when referee Enrique Caceres had initially awarded a foul outside the box rather than a penalty when Salah was pulled by Zhirkov.

Salah smashed the 10th penalty of the tournament into the roof of the net, but it was little consolation as Russia took a huge step towards the knockout phase of a World Cup for the first time 32 years.

In-form Ronaldo looms for Morocco, Spain face Iran

In-form Ronaldo looms for Morocco, Spain face Iran

Cristiano Ronaldo
ROSTOV-ON-DON, RUSSIA: Cristiano Ronaldo will hone in on Morocco on Wednesday after his stunning hat-trick in Portugal´s World Cup opener, while 2010 winners Spain play Iran in Group B.

The five-time world player of the year bagged a sublime treble against Spain in the heat of Sochi on Friday in Russia 2018´s stand-out match so far, the 51st of his glittering career. "I´m very happy, it´s a nice personal record to have, one more in my career," Ronaldo said on Tuesday.

"For me the most important thing is to emphasise what the team did against one of the favourites to win this World Cup." Spain head to Kazan to face Iran still counting the cost of a chaotic run-up to the tournament during which Julen Lopetegui was sensationally sacked just two days before they opened their campaign.

Former international defender Fernando Hierro is now at the helm but barely a week into the tournament Spain -- expected to join Brazil, Germany and France in the latter stages -- have endured more drama than they would have wanted or expected.

"It´s a crucial match that will determine our World Cup destiny," said midfielder Isco of the Iran showdown. "We want to score from the opening minute, even though that won´t be easy." Iran kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 win against Morocco, thanks to a late own goal by Aziz Bouhaddouz, piling the pressure on Spain at Kazan Arena on Wednesday.

Iran sit top of the pile as the only Group B team with a win so far, an achievement that sparked widespread celebrations in the streets of Tehran and elsewhere throughout the Islamic republic.

Coach Carlos Queiroz concedes Iran now face one of the biggest challenges in their World Cup history, but maintains they can "make the impossible possible". "If the game against Morocco was the World Cup final for us, the game against Spain will be the Universe Cup final," said the former Real Madrid coach.

Iran have never beaten a European side at a World Cup -- their only previous victory was a 2-1 win over the United States in France in 1998. Morocco need to bounce back from their agonising defeat against Iran but Portugal and Ronaldo in particular pose Herve Renard´s men a monumental challenge at Moscow´s Luzhniki Stadium.

"We lost a battle but we haven´t lost the war. We´re not dead," said midfielder Faycal Fajr, one of 17 foreign-born players in Morocco´s squad.

100 up for Suarez

Uruguay take on Saudi Arabia in Wednesday´s other game, with forward Luis Suarez set to mark his 100th appearance for the Celeste in the Group A clash in Rostov-on-Don.

The Barcelona man has exited the last two World Cups in disgrace after being sent off for a goal-line handball against Ghana and he infamously sank his teeth into Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini in 2014.

The game itself should be straightforward for Uruguay, who won their opener 1-0 against a Mohamed Salah-less Egypt, as they face a Saudi Arabia team hammered 5-0 by hosts Russia in the tournament´s curtain-raiser.

The Saudis´ preparations were jolted by a mid-air mishap on Monday when the plane carrying them to Rostov suffered a fire in one of its engines. The aircraft landed safely after what one of the Saudi players called a "simple malfunction".

Hosts Russia stand on the verge of the knockout stages after Tuesday´s 3-1 win over Egypt in Saint Petersburg. After a goalless first half, Ahmed Fathi scored an own goal before Denis Cheryshev struck and Artem Dzyuba added a third. Salah scored a consolation penalty late on but it was not enough for the Pharaohs.

Earlier, Senegal secured a first win for an African nation at this tournament, benefiting from a terrible error from Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny to beat Poland 2-1 in Moscow. Tuesday´s other Group H clash saw Japan come out surprise winners against 10-man Colombia after midfielder Carlos Sanchez received the tournament´s first red card for a handball minutes into the game.
