Pakistani rupee inches further up against US dollar in interbank, open markets

Pakistani rupee inches further up against US dollar in interbank, open markets
The rupee registered gains against the US dollar in the interbank and open markets for a third consecutive day on Friday, as the Pakistani currency slowly recovered after hitting record lows against the greenback earlier this week.

The US dollar was down Rs0.53 to close the day at Rs150.91 in the interbank market. In the open market, the greenback shed Rs0.80 was being traded at Rs151.70 by the close of the day.

The price of gold also dropped by a further Rs500 to Rs70,400 per tola (11.33 grams).

The rupee had been registering record lows against the US dollar earlier in the week following the announcement of a $6 billion bailout agreement with the International Monetary Fund.

The IMF accord, which is still pending final approval by the Fund, foresees a 'market-determined' rate for the rupee. The rupee—which many analysts consider overvalued—was previously managed by the central bank in a de facto controlled float.

The State Bank of Pakistan, which lifted interest rates by 150 basis points on Monday to 12.25%, said it was watching the foreign exchange market closely and would act in the case of "unwarranted volatility". It said the recent slide "reflects the continuing resolution of accumulated imbalances of the past and some role of supply and demand factors".

The sliding rupee had caused alarm in Pakistan, which is already facing inflation likely to average over 7% for the year and surging costs for fuel and power—both heavily influenced by the dollar exchange rate.

US dollar reaches Rs154 in open market

US dollar reaches Rs154 in open market

US dollar
The US dollar continued its steep incline in Pakistan, reaching a new all-time high in the interbank and open market on Tuesday.

In the open market, the dollar rose by Rs3 and was being sold at Rs154. The buying rate for the dollar in the open market was Rs152.50

With an increase of Rs2.72, the dollar reached Rs151.92 in the interbank market.

The rupee has been falling against the dollar following an agreement with the International Monetary Fund on a $6 billon loan with expected strict conditions including a “market determined” exchange rate.

The rupee’s official exchange rate is supported by the central bank under a de facto managed float system and many analysts consider the currency to be overvalued.

According to data from the State Bank, the central bank’s foreign exchange reserves as of May 3 stood at $8.984 billion, equivalent to less than three months of import payments.

“Basically, the sudden spike of the dollar against the rupee is due to the impact of the IMF deal plus a shortage of dollars in the market,” said Saad Hashemy, chief economist and director of research at Topline Securities in Karachi.

With inflation running at more than 8 per cent, a weaker currency is likely to add to pressure on household budgets, particularly on power and gas bills, where the government faces growing pressure to allow regulated prices to rise.
