The election took place during a three-day 19th-Meeting of the SATRC, organized by the PTA in collaboration with Asia-Pacific Tele community here.
The name of Muhammad Naveed was proposed by Chairman of Nepal Regulatory Authority Digambar Jha.
The meeting was also attended by other members of the region.
The meeting also elected Director General of Bhutan Regulatory Authority Chencho Dorji as Vice Chairman SATRC-19.
The meeting also proposed to hold SATRC-20 in Bhutan in 2019.
The Council Meeting held from December 13-15 provided a platform to national and international speakers to discuss the regulator roundtable discussion, industry-regulatory dialogue and industry session to share best practices and experience.
Representatives from nine countries of Asia Pacific Region, namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Iran, India, Maldives, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and as well from the United Kingdom, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand attended the meeting.
During the concluding session, APT Secretary General Areewan Haorangsi said deliberations through such meetings were helpful to share international experiences with a focus on current issues and challenges faced by the Asia-Pacific countries.
She congratulated the PTA chairman for being elected SATRC chairman and hoped that all the APT agendas upcoming in the next year would be accomplished.
The PTA chairman said the SATRC had already done some outstanding work, which it would continue.
As Council chairman, he would carry on cooperation and engagement among the regulators in the best possible manner, he added.
He said that telecom regulators of the region had some big challenges and opportunities ahead, considering the fact that the region had such a vast human capital. "There is a need to channelize our efforts towards embracing the future technologies amicably," he added.
Muhammad Naveed said the benefits of ICT driven economic growth must be passed on to the common man and "we, as a regulators, have a central role to play in this regard.
" A conducive and friendly regulatory environment would not only improve the confidence of the regional investors but also generate new economic opportunities for the population of the SATRC region, he added.
Communications Authority of Maldives Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ilyas Ahmed and Afghanistan Telecommunication Regulatory Authority Chairman Dr Mohammad N Azizi were the moderators of different sessions.
The sessions concluded on the key ideas and outcomes that have emerged through knowledge and experience sharing in previous sessions and examine the principles, practices and recommendations which will assist regulators in the Asia-Pacific region in addressing the telecommunication regulatory challenges.
The aims and goals are to enhance cooperation between regulators and industry to work towards a harmonized regulatory environment.
Some of the major issues addressed by the SATRC were Evolution of Regulatory Framework in South Asia and Asia-Pacific, National ICT policy and Regulator's role and its challenges.
It is pertinent to mention here that the SATRC meetings are held annually and attended by the heads of telecommunication regulatory authorities in the South Asia Region, senior officials of the ministries and departments, and industry.
The SATRC meets annually to discuss the key policy and regulatory issues of concern to the SATRC members.
