Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed on Saturday rejected the perception that the West Indies team travelling to Pakistan for the three-match T20I series is weak due to the absence of big-name players.

The wicketkeeper-batsman echoed PCB Chairman Najam Sethi's sentiments in today's pre-match presser, telling media men not to undermine West Indies or any other side in T20 format, where margins for victory are slim and any side can come out on top.

"West Indies are not weak," said Sarfraz. "[In fact], we cannot take any team lightly in the shortest format."

Sarfraz said he plans on using the series to try out new combinations for the busy season that lies ahead. However, he also made it clear that experimentation does not mean his team will not try and overpower the Calpsos each time the two teams clash.

"We have a lot of important series coming up before the World Cup so we want to make some new combinations with our youngsters," he said. "Having said that, we will go for a clean sweep because doing so will help us retain our number one spot in the ICC rankings."

The 15-man squad announced for the Windies series features several youngsters and first-timers, including Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hussain Talat and Asif Ali.

Sarfraz urged the trio to repay the selectors' faith in them, saying: "They will have to prove that they were selected for a reason."

Sarfraz admitted that the strict security detail for Windies players would be a problem for the fans but urged them to be brave for the sake of the country.

"The people of Karachi should brave these issues and still come to the ground so that a positive message goes to the world," he said.

Sarfraz also said that the pace duo of Afridi and Rahat Ali will not feature in the series' opening match on Sunday as they've been rested.

Eleven members of the West Indies squad arrived in Karachi
Eleven members of the West Indies squad arrived in Karachi on Saturday night, ahead of the three-match T20 international series against Pakistan.

The first group of players and officials flew into the Jinnah International Airport at 9:30pm, while the rest of the squad will arrive via another flight early tomorrow.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi tweeted about the players' arrival.

Among the players who arrived on Saturday were spinner Samuel Badree and former Peshawar Zalmi star Marlon Samuels.

Sindh Sports Minister Sardar Bux Mahar presented the traditional Sindhi 'Ajrak' to the Windies players at the airport to welcome them to Pakistan.

Two different flights were said to have been taken due to lack of seats for everyone on the flight from Dubai to Karachi.

The two-time World T20 champions will play Pakistan on April 1, 2 and 3.

The foreign players will depart from the stadium right after the match for the airport.

The visiting team will not be taking part in any practice session before the first game on Sunday evening. The captains will also not hold a pre-series press conference, nor will there be a photoshoot with the series trophy as is mostly the case.

West Indies' 13-member squad

On Friday, Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed its 13-member squad for the tour of Pakistan which will feature in three T20s on April 1, 2 and 3.

Jason Mohammed will be the captain of the squad, which includes Samuel Badree, Rayad Emrit, Andre Fletcher, Andre McCarthy, Keemo Paul, Veerasammy Permaul, Rovman Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Marlon Samuels, Odean Smith, Chadwick Walton, Kesrick Williams.

Stuart Law will be the head coach, with Alfonso Thomas and Ryan Maron as assistant coaches.

Commenting on the tour, CWI Chief Executive Officer Jonny Grave said: “Following the successful hosting of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Final in Karachi on the weekend, our squad are now en route to Pakistan for our three-match T20I series.

“This Tour is a further major step for our friends at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to bring their cricket back home, and we are pleased that our players and support staff have recognised this and supported this venture.”

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Saturday that a conspiracy to snatch provincial powers is unacceptable to the political organisation.

Bilawal addressed a gathering in Sanghar today and during his speech he alleged the federation to devoid Sindh of water supply and claimed that the political party has been working on water projects for the past ten years.

He complained that the people of Sindh need potable water as well as supply for agriculture. He accused the federal government and IRSA to have kept Sindh dry and begging for water.

While talking about the 18th Amendment in the Constitution of Pakistan, PPP chairman said that the amendment ensured autonomy of the provinces. The amendment, for the first time, strengthened the province in terms of finances, politics and administration, Bilawal added.

Bilawal alleged federally ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) of carrying out attacks on 18th amendment. He claimed that PML-N was hatching a conspiracy to withdraw powers given to the provinces under 18th amendment.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz senior leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has made it clear that he wants to continue his association with the party only if it is not made a housemaid.

The former interior minister also said he would soon choose a party through which he would contest the general elections.

He said, “Misunderstandings were being spread about the stay of Shehbaz Sharif in London. If he is given the mandate to truly work as the president of the party, there may be many improvements.”

However, Nisar feared that Shehbaz would not be given space and mandate to work.

He said that the decision about his ticket would not be made by any party or a parliamentary board; instead, he would decide himself in the next week that from which party’s platform he would fight the election.

He said that he had no contacts with Nawaz Sharif like before but he “is still associated with the PML”.

Nisar said that he founded the party 34 years back with Sharif and other leaders and he belonged to the party.

He clarified that he was friends with Imran Khan since childhood but never had any political association.

“There has been no contact directly or indirectly with Imran for the last three and a half years,” he added.

About the nexus of PTI and PPP during the Senate elections, he said, “It is not unusual for Imran and Zardari to join hands. Sharif had said many things about Benazir in the past but he shook hands with her at one time and signed the Charter of Democracy.”

Nisar said, “The handshake between Imran and Zardari is a good omen. There is no harm in sitting together if the ideas of the two match.”

He said, “Misunderstandings are being spread about Shehbaz’s stay in London, but he is in London because of his health issues and will return home today.”

He said that he thought that accountability could not be done under the current situation in Pakistan. “No one is serious about it. The uncertainties have not reduced by the PM-CJP meeting. They have rather increased. If the purpose of the meeting was to create soft corner in the institutions, then it is the very thing I have been pointing out for the whole year that blaming the institutions should stop.”

He said, “Had this path been adopted earlier, the PM-CJP meeting would not have been required.”

He recommended the government and the Supreme Court to work together to remove suspicions.

Nisar expressed his reservations over the PM’s visit to US and meeting with VP. He said such meetings would promote the negative American narrative.

“The purpose of this meeting is beyond my understanding,” said Nisar. “We should not give the US authorities any chance to lecture our leadership. The one-sided US narrative should be discouraged.”
